Abstract
Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate nursing students¡¯ perceptions and explore their experiences after participating high-fidelity simulation-based practicum.

Method: A descriptive survey and focus group interview were conducted. Participants were 25 junior nursing students in Y University who attended to the eight sessions of high-fidelity simulation-based practicum in 2012. Effects of the simulation program were evaluated using the National League for Nursing¡¯s instruments at baseline, after 4 sessions and 8 sessions: educational practice, simulation design, satisfaction and self-confidence. In addition, a focus group interview was done to explore the simulation experiences. Descriptive statistics, repeated measures ANOVA, paired t-test and content analysis were used for data analyses.

Results: Educational practice (t=2.41, p=0.024) and simulation design (t=4.95, p<0.001) were significantly higher after 8 sessions practicum than after 4 sessions practicum. Satisfaction (t=3.82, p=0.001) and self-confidence (t=5.73, p<0.001) were significantly higher after 8 sessions practicum than after 4 sessions practicum. Focus group interview revealed that lessons learned from simulation were focused assessment and intervention, priority and decision making, critical thinking and problem-solving, communication and information giving to patients and their family, communication and cooperation with doctors, and professional identity.

Conclusion: High fidelity simulation-based practicum is an effective teaching and learning method with some advantages in acquiring nursing competencies across the time.
